An Obsolete Instrument [#52] - Click for previous

As a result of accurate digital watches, atomic clocks, and weather stations around the world, it is amazing that Sundials like this one (located at the Botanical Gardens in Niagara Falls) still exist. The Sundial is the oldest known device used to measure time (horology). They are believed to date as far back as 1500 BC and have been obsolete since the 1800's, when personal clocks became more affordable. Sundials are all created differently, but the concept is the same. They are all fixed structures that utilize the movement of the sun to cast a shadow on a numbered face as it moves from east to west during the day.
