On March 23rd, the St. Lawrence Seaway opened the Welland Canal, celebrating the 175th anniversary in a top hat ceremony.
This picture was taken exactly where the Port Robinson Lift Bridge (Number 12) once stood. On August 25th, 1974 a giant laker (like the one featured in this photograph) struck the bridge, and knocked it from its supports and into the water. The Welland Canal was in turn shut down for fifteen days, as clean-up crews were sent to remove the submerged steel. It was estimated to cost twenty million dollars to repair the damaged structure - the bridge was never rebuilt.
