Most people are unaware that a winged ant (like the one featured in the above picture) is soon to be a queen. After mating, the female ant sheds her wings and the no longer used wing muscles will become an important source of nutrients for her during the early stages of colony development. Many people that keep ant farms will tell you that a colony without a queen has very little motivation, and will not survive for more than a few months. These settlers have one thing on their minds and that is to establish a fully functional colony. Very few queens successfully survive this period.
